  • Alexander Coosemans

    Alexander Coosemans

Biography : In 1641-1642 Alexander Coosemans entered in the Guild of Saint Luc as apprentice of Jan Davidzs De Heem in Antwerp, in 1645 he obtained the guild title of the Master at the age of 18. Between 1649 and 1651, after his stay in Italy (in particular in Rome), the artist settled in his home town. Having influenced a lot by the Italian still life during his voyage in Italy, Alexander Coosemans showed his origin artistic temperament, standing out from the De Heem’s style. Later he created very nice compositions, which often composed of the different horizontal levels, usually charged. The present objects and typical southern fruits weren’t similar to the De Heem’s repertoire. His still life is marked by a peculiar picturesque research, the game of light and shade animate his canvases. Except the Vanitas (Brussels, MRBAB), all another works of Alexander Coosemans depict the fine decorative tables, foodstuffs, garlands of flowers and fruits, musical instruments. The compositions of the Flemish artistes of the middle-century often represent flowers and fruits, molluscs, shellfish, tin and silver trays, glasses and flasks of wine, the world of visible objects, sumptuous and abundant, in all its numerous manifestations. Exhibition : Museums : Antwerp, Brussels, Madrid, Vienne, Bordeaux, Copenhague, etc.

Biography : Aert van der Neer grew up in Arkel a town on the river Waal just east of Dordrecht. Later he resided in Amsterdam where he was an important painter of moonlight and winter landscapes. Aert’s earliest known painting is a genre scene dated 1632, now in the Nardoni Galerie in Prague. His early landscapes reveal close stylistic affinities with the work of the brothers Joachim and Rafel Camphuyzen , but also influence of Alexander Kierincx, Gillis Claesz. d’Hondecoeter and Roelandt Savery all so-called artists of the Frankenthal School, who took the idiom of the Flemish landscape painting to the Netherlands. Detailed Description : Skaters on a Frozen Canal by a Village Oil on Panel, 40.3 71.8 cm. Signed with the monogram lower left: AVDN Provenance: Baron Edmond de Beurnonville, their sale Paris, 9 May, 1881, lot 393. Agnew’s, London. G.J. Gould, Lakewood, New Jersey, by 1908. Private Collection, Georgetown, Washington 1908-2005. Literature: C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonné, London VII, 1908, p. 443, no. 501. W. Schulz, Aert van der Neer, Doornspijk, 2002, p. 162, no. 105. In the present winter landscape there is an emphasis on cool blue hues, alleviated in certain areas by patches of pink and red in clothing and buildings. The artist has painted a typical bleak Dutch winter through the use of predominantly grey and brown tones, except in the build up of light where colour has been eliminated and replaced by monochromatic build-up of browns, greens and pale greys. Quite unusual is the detailed execution of the building on the left of the composition. The golf players and skaters who animate the scene are drawn with extraordinary sureness, an art in which continued Hendrick Avercamp. Other Dealers:
