  • Trevor Bell

    Trevor Bell

Biography : Trevor Bell was born in Leeds in 1930 and attended the local college of art. In his twenties, working in West Cornwall, he made his reputation as a leading member of the younger generation of St. Ives artists who established British art on the world stage. Following his enormously successful first one-man exhibition at the Waddington Galleries in London in 1958, Trevor Bell was awarded the Paris Biennale International Painting Prize and an Italian Government Scholarship. He later became a Gregory Fellow in painting at Leeds University. After a larger travelling retrospective in Scotland, Ireland and England in 1970 and a major one-man show at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1973, Trevor was invited to become Professor for Master (Graduate) Painting at the Florida State University in Tallahassee. There he developed the large-scale, intensely coloured paintings for which he is best known. Exhibition : Important exhibitions were held at the Corcoran Gallery and the Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum in Miami, the Cummer Gallery in Jacksonville and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was included in the London Tate Gallery’s St.Ives 1939 – 1964 exhibition, and more recently in the 1996-7 and 1998-9, exhibited large-scale paintings at the Tate Gallery, St Ives. He has been a regular exhibitor in private galleries in Miami, Atlanta and Chicago, and has had works purchased and commissioned by numerous international museum, public and private collections. He was twice a recipient of fellowships from the Fine Arts Council of Florida. He has lived and worked in England, France, Italy and Canada, returning to live in Cornwall in 1996. In 1998 he was honoured with an Emeritus Professorship by Florida State University.

Light, as we perceive it, gives us only a brief glimpse of the momentary realities in which we exist. Muth strives to record with precision the perceptible light-space-time phenomena. As these three elements intertwine, a three-dimensional topography of pure light is formed, revealing a window into the elusive realms of the light-space-time paradox. His intent is to reveal a cognitive holographic dimension within the viewer’s ordinary experiences of light, and to stimulate a dialogue between the ordinary and the extraordinary planes of understanding. This piece is part of the Spherical Light series. The changing color pallet of this work is extraordinary and visible in all lighting conditions. A line of luminescent pigment behind the holographic emulsions is evident creating a subtle thin blue line when the lights have been turned off. This work is particularly rare because of a mechanical error during the holographic emulsion process so it is impossible to achieve this particular color combination and light movement again. Muth began his studies in art and physics at the University of New Mexico in 1974, and later continued at the University of Houston, and the University of Texas at Austin. In 1980, he began his holographic exploration at The Museum Of Holography in New York under Fred Unterseher. He relocated to the Telluride, Colorado area in 1985 to build his first holographic studio, and spent the next 7 years honing his skills in the Denisyuk single-beam holography technique. In 1994, his studio was reimagined and constructed in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he currently lives and works.

  • Alex Rennie

    Alex Rennie

Biography : Born in the UK in 1977, Alex Rennie received his Bachelors in Painting with honors from the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education. In 2009 he was a selected artist for the BP award presented by Great Britain’s National Portrait Gallery. Rennie paints urban images derived from construction scenes captured around London that resonate with more universal themes of growth, renewal and development. Through Rennie’s unique vision we gain a new perspective on a very familiar city, both conceptually and at a more fundamental, human level. Rennie gives the viewer a sense that the people who make up and define an urban community are only fleeting presences, and even the (often) grand monoliths built to service their needs are ultimately only temporary structures. Detailed Description : “Assembled as walls, helixes and balancing stacks, my wood paintings are varying compositions of construction timbers also used to describe growth and change. Each length of wood in the Stack paintings corresponds to the city’s population over a certain duration. Some timbers contain found graffiti and scrawls, particularly initials and hearts multiplied over and over to symbolize individual lives, their passing and union. Like the infinitely repeated hearts and initials, these ideas include a slightly existential feel. Sometimes splintered, carved or burnt, cracks and ruptures in the wood often form past, present or expanding maps of the city.” - Artist Statement
