    Biography : 1606: Born 15 July in Leiden, the eight of nine children, to Harman Gerritsz. van Rijn, a miller, and Neeltgen van Zuytbroeck, the daughter of a baker 1620: Matriculated in Leiden University; later begins his studies with the painter Jacob van Swanenburgh 1624: Studies in Amsterdam with the history painter Pieter Lastman and then returns to Leiden as an independent painter 1628 His first dated etchings, two portraits of his mother, B. 352 and B. 354 1631 Moves to Amsterdam and lives with the art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh 1632 Receives his first important painting commission, the Anatomy Lesson of Professor Tulp (the Hague, Mauritshuis) 1634 Marries Saskia van Uylenburgh, the niece of Hendrick van Uylenburgh; etches The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds 1639 Buys a large house on the Sint Anthonisbreestraat 1641 Birth of Titus, his only child to live to adulthood; etchings include The Triumph of Mordecai and Cornelis Claesz. van Ansloo 1642 Saskia dies; completes The Nightwatch (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) 1645 Etches Six's Bridge 1649 Completes The Hundred Guilder Print; Hendrickje Stoffels moves into his house 1652 Receives a commission for Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) 1653 Executes Saint Jerome in an Italian Landscape, is in financial difficulties and borrows money from Jan Six, among others 1655 Financial situation becomes worse leading to voluntary sale of some of his possessions; completes the Ecce Homo and Thomas Haaringh 1656 Applied for bankruptcy and an inventory is taken of his possessions; etches Jan Lutma 1657/8 Bankruptcy sale administered by Thomas Jacobsz.
